In 2013, a group of animal loving volunteers recognized there was a greater need than what our area was able to offer. They came together to form an all volunteer group, and Midwest Pet Refuge was formed. In 2014 MPR was incorporated, and by 2015 MPR was officially determined a tax exempt 501(c)3 non profit with a full board of directors. We rely on volunteers, fosters, supporters, and donors to operate. As a completely volunteer run organization with no large scale facility, we have had to utilize the help of foster homes to house most of our animals in the past. We do not discriminate between fins, feathers, fur or even scales, and if we can help an animal on to a better life, we will! MPR tries hard to help any animal in need in some way, whether it be networking, transporting, needed vetting, fostering or even advice; however actual admissions are often limited due to space constraints. In 2016 the idea of Cat Tales Bookstore was born. It has been a wonderful resource for MPR. Concannon's Pastry Shop was established in 1959 by J. Michael and Wanda Concannon on Charles Street in downtown Muncie, Indiana. In 1978 we built a new facility at 620 N. Walnut Street and moved in. Since then -- thanks to a great response from customers like you -- we have remodeled and added square footage at least four times at that location. In 1978, Michael T. Concannon purchased the business from his parents. Concannon's is truly a rare family business, with the third generation now heavily involved. Marc Concannon is a trained baker and oversees all candy, popcorn and coffee production. We have diversified the bakery to include our gourmet popcorns, our house-roasted coffees and our own line of fine chocolates. In 2009 we opened our Bakery Café at 4801 W. John Hull started working in the farm equipment business in the year of 1896. John died in 1934 and in the same year, Norman Hull (John’s son) and Manuel Hull became partners. Norman Hull thus became the second generation in the business. Manuel Hull died in 1941 and Norman Hull became the sole owner of the company. In 1951 Richard Hull (Norman’s second oldest son) became the third generation in the business. Norman Hull Jr. (Norman’s youngest son, also known as “Buzz”) joined the business in 1960. Hull Brothers was incorporated in 1966. Norman Sr. died in 1974 and Richard and Buzz continued the corporation until their retirements.Fourth Generation (Buzz’s sons) Tom Hull and Bob Hull took over the business with Paul Evans (Richard’s son in law); Tom passed away in 2009. Shortly after, Tom’s wife Jill joined the business. In 2013 Paul and his family left the business and Buzz’s son Dave Hull joined the business with Bob and Jill. Randy Evans (Richard’s grandson) is our full time AFS technician and IT Technical support. Cole Hull (Tom & Jill’s son) and Lane Hull (Dave’s son) are also working in the business. [read more]

It all started in 1980 as a novel concept: offer small runs of custom-printed napkins to the specialty advertising industry. Until then, only large quantities had been available. In a 2,000 square foot building, Founder Jim Tranter, MAS, thus conceived The 500 Line. Armed with his vision, two employees and a single-page sales sheet, he provided the opportunity for end-users all around the United States to order as few as 500 pieces for the first time. By 1996, a new level of demand was recognized for the growing corporate community. They desired higher quantities in much shorter lead times, but still at reasonable prices. Tranter responded and High Lines was born, a competitively priced line of food service products imprinted in high speeds at quantities of 10,000 or more with incredibly quick lead times: as fast as 10 days. Today, Tranter Graphics is located in a 75,000 square-foot facility, housing 50 production presses and over 90 craftspeople. These talented individuals work as a team to distribute more than 700 customized products all over the world. In the late 1980’s Karen Hoag and her husband adopted a single llama from a neighbor who could no longer care for it, and agreed to raise the llama on their small farm. From that moment on, over the years the couple became known in the area as a place to surrender wild and exotic animals that people no longer could care for properly. There were multiple reasons why the animals were surrendered, which still exist to this day. The reasons for surrendering wild and exotic animals range from the animal size, temperament, care involved, and many times lack of resources or adequate space. Originally named PARC (Professional Animal Retirement Center) in 2001, the organization became a nonprofit 501(c) 3, and was then named Black Pine Animal Sanctuary. Due to the number of animals and need for more space, in 2006 the Noble County 4H Club leased the current location to BPAS, and this is now the forever home to over 60 species of animals, reptiles, and birds. Black Pine Animal Sanctuary is one of the only multi species sanctuaries in the Midwest. The sanctuary includes an Avian Building, Primate House, and Reptile House, which are all climate controlled through the winter cold months. In 2019, Black Pine Animal Sanctuary became accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, which assures the public that BPAS is a true sanctuary. Unlike many self-professed sanctuaries, and zoos, we do not buy, sell, breed or trade the animals at Black Pine Animal Sanctuary. Animals who now live at the sanctuary, have been surrendered or confiscated by legal authorities and will remain at Black Pine Animal Sanctuary, living peacefully and being well cared for, for the rest of their lives.
